Spiritual perspective of Navratri

Updated: Sep 27, 2022

Navratri is a Festival celebrated for 9 days and the 10th day is named as "Vijaya Dashami" (10th day of victory) - this was the day when Goddess Durga took over Mahishasura (Evil) who kept changing his appearance to escape.

How is it still relative to us in this generations and many more generations to come?

Have you got a thought - so as per the story, this happened many centuries ago, but how is it related to our generation now and many more years to come? Why do we still celebrate this festival?

To understand that, we have to look at it from spiritual and holistic perspective than it being a story of some third parties involved.

Everyone has 3 Gunas -

  1. Tamas (Lazy & Lethargic)

  2. Rajas (Anger, Frustration, Irritation)

  3. Sattva (Holistic, Calm and Composed)

These Gunas starts from the base of our spine and moves upwards.

It is our individual consciousness that keeps going up and down between these 3 gunas and hence causes behavioral changes.

Have you resonate with the fact that some days you feel more Tamasic , some days more Rajasic and some days , you feel like a God - you do good to people and feel so good about yourself?

Do you?

Then you go back in time during some incident happened and we "reacted" harshly to it, but later we repent thinking "oh. I should not have reacted that way" or "I could have said something else instead". But once out of your mouth, it's out; it's said and cannot be undone. Yes, it happens with all!

The trick is to first become AWARE of behavioral "pattern". Many people do not even recognize this. First step is AWARENESS. Even if they are aware, many do not bother to change themselves, it just doesn't occur to them that it can be changed, but they repent repetitively. Some of them want to change this, but do not know HOW.

Here is the answer to all of this:

The "EVILS" that the "DEVI" fought is not external person, the DEVI is the ENERGY within us and the "EVIL" is the TAMAS and RAJAS gunas within us.

We all know that the Universal law of E = MC2

Universe is all about Energy and Vibrations.

The big bang happened from no where due to explosion of energy, which created various life forms and hence even within us, there is Energy.

Humans operate the same way Universe is operating.

Spirituality is Science!

Infact, Spirituality is Science Beyond Science.

Panchasharira

Next, we come to our body.

We are not just this physical body. We are made of subtle bodies (Panchasharira)

All of us have 5 bodies - 1 physical and 4 subtle bodies (not visible to common eyes).

In the subtle bodies, there resides CHAKRAS (Energy centers)

7 main chakras reside within the body (at subtle level) and 2 chakras outside the body (6 inch and 12 inches above the head respectively)

Please look at the Chakra Chart in the above pic, start from the base of the spine - Mooladhara till Sahasrara.

Look at the BEEJ MANTRAS of each Chakra :

  1. Mooladhara - Lum

  2. Swadishtana - Vam

  3. Manipura - Rum

  4. Anahatha - Yam

  5. Vishuddhi - Hum

  6. Aajna - Om

  7. Sahasrara - Om

When these mantras are chanted, by focusing on respective chakra, divine vibrations are generated, which opens up the chakras to absorb more cosmic energy via the Universe.

What happens when we are energized from within?

We operate at our best, we are 200% productive and there is a will to work, to laugh, to be joyful, to be alive! The quality of life increases.

Navarathri and Mantras

Navrathri is the time of the year, where our body is more open to this "healing". The power of the mantras on these chakras are more powerful. So everyone utilizes this time of the year to upgrade themselves, to become better and better - for better quality of life and eventually transcend beyond the fight and flight mode, moving towards self realization.

So during Navrathri, you could do the beej mantra chanting. Chant each mantra on respective chakra for minimum of 5 mins and you will see the change, you will feel different (in a good way) , you will feel the confidence building from within (ofcourse as anything, it improves with practice)

Apart from these mantra, Navadurga - the 9 forms of devi (energy) that is the 'owner' of each chakra have specific Devi Mantra for their strengths and when they are chanted, more magical things will start happening in your life.

Note: the Grace of the Guru enhances your inner experience, since most of the mantras have to be initiated by the Guru to us. However the ones mentioned here and common mantras, which are open to all to practice and has great benefits - since we have to start somewhere, and this is good for us, why not start? As we progress, we will be blessed even more.
